Written by Jordan Norris | June 23, 2020

We know how it goes. You've heard about YWAM, prayed, and decided to do a DTS, and now you're just looking for that perfect place to begin your journey of knowing God and making God known.

Where should you go? Here are 13 reasons why we think you should do your DTS with at YWAM Mazatlan!

1. Location, location, location—it's hard to get much closer to the beach!

We live less than one block from the beach, along one of the world's longest boardwalks. Here you'll be able to do infinite outdoor activities, exercise, meditate, and have quiet times on the beach, or just look at the ocean from your window.

2. Take long walks or pray at a place like this

Mazatlan has plenty of beautiful, oceanside locations where you can spend some alone time with God, or have a group prayer session for the nations of the world.

3. Worship Jesus with people from all over the world

One of our favorite things about living in an international community is our corporate worship times. We worship nearly anywhere, whether we're in our auditorium, cafe, or even out on the street!

4. Enjoy multi-national, multi-generational community life

Living with people from different cultures and countries is one of the best parts about our YWAM community. You'll learn other customs and languages from your new international friends, and they'll learn from you, too!

5. See lives changed through our Homes of Hope ministry

Homes of Hope works to build a foundation of hope for families in need. You could have a chance to volunteer with this ministry and see lives transformed through the power of the gospel and the hope that it brings.

6. Share Christ freely in a culture that's open and ready to receive God's love

Mexico is a country with hearts fully open to receive the love of God! You can share openly about your belief and hope in Christ, and nearly everyone will let you pray for them. Who's ready for some evangelism?

7. Surf your way through DTS

You can surf in Mazatlan year round. There are breaks everywhere, and the beach in front of our base is a point well known for its solid waves. Whether you're a beginner or advanced surfer, you'll have no problem finding waves perfect for your skill level.

8. Start your international missionary journey

What if Mazatlan was just the first step? You'll likely have the chance to go on outreach to a different country, maybe even a different continent. You'll learn how to adapt to new cultures and share Christ with people of different religions.

God will show you His heart for the nations, and who knows? Maybe Mazatlan is just the first step...

9. Tacos, quesadillas, carne asada—you name it!

If you aren't convinced yet, this is the moment. TACOS! It's impossible to come to Mazatlan and not see a taco stand on nearly every street. Whether it's a food cart or a restaurant, Mazatlan has some of the most delicious food you can try in Mexico. When you get here, make sure to order a "chorreada." Not sure what that is? Guess you'll have to see for yourself.

10. Take a hike just minutes from the base and end up... here

If you love walking, hiking, photography, or just exploring in general, then you can't miss a visit to the Mazatlan lighthouse. It's is the tallest natural lighthouse in the world. Here you'll find one of the best views of the city, not to mention a perfect morning quiet time spot.

11. Good coffee, everywhere

From our in-house Café Selah to the local Looney Bean, you'll never be missing out on a good brew (or smoothie, for you non-coffee drinkers). We created our own café not only for the coffee, but also to be a place to rest and connect with God.

12. Learn Spanish and immerse yourself in the vibrant Mexican culture

On the topic of different cultures, did you know that most of our community speaks Spanish? For you non-Spanish speakers, this will make a perfect opportunity to learn the local language. But don't worry, most of our community speaks English, too, so you won't be lost!
